How to be a True Superhero? Kindness is Key!

What is a Superhero? I decided to look up the definition and this is what I found.

Superhero: a benevolent fictional character with superhuman powers, such as Superman.

I discovered a few things:

  1. That someone of superhero quality by definition should have some type super power or superhuman strength,
  2. That a superhero is always fighting some kind of evil, and;
  3. Even in the definition it states that this is a character of fiction.

I thought about this for a moment. As a kid growing up I used to read comics regularly and idolized the superheroes in them. I was conditioned at a very young age into thinking that that was the only way to be a superhero. The very definition of superhero puts the word and the true meaning behind it on the fictional shelf… something great to imagine or dream about… but something not really attainable.

If you asked me if I wanted to be a superhero by what I knew a superhero to be, I would probably be indifferent to the thought. All that fighting, the constant battle between good and evil, never-ending animosity, day in and day out…I mean good grief! Sure the skin-tight outfit with a cape may sound appealing to some, but who wants the rest of the mess that comes with it?

But if you take this definition and throw it out the window, do a little research and have a look around you, you’ll see that you are surrounded by superheroes. Don’t believe me? Let me share some examples: Henry Ford, Mother Theresa, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, moms, dads, big brothers, big sisters… me…you!

You don’t need a cape…although it probably would make someone laugh or at least smile. You don’t super powers, neat gadgets, or a fight to schedule with an enemy every day. What you could start with is kindness and maybe a smile. No, it’s not a typo, kindness is key.

I took a course in September of 2015 called the Master Key Experience that challenged me to find the hero within. I have completed the course, but my journey still continues. I was taught that perfection is the labour of life…and I’m loving every minute of it.

I have two superhero examples that I would like to share with you.

The first one is my son (a hero in training) and wife. A family in our neighbourhood lost their dog a couple of days ago. We had received a flyer on our front door with a picture and contact information. Yesterday afternoon my son spotted the dog in the field behind our house. My wife and son went to follow the dog, and my wife had contacted the owner. The owner rushed over to their location and was immediately reunited with her dog. She was overcome with emotion and was very grateful that my son had spotted her dog!

The second story I have is about a young girl who is a contestant on ‘America’s Got Talent’. Her name is Grace Vanderwaal. Listen to the kindness in her voice as she speaks to the judges. Listen to her sing as she pours her heart into every word of her song, and pay close attention to the expression on her face as she pauses for a moment before walking off the stage after her performance. She became a hero the moment she decided to share her beautiful gift with the rest of the world.
